USC Meets Motel

Motel Motel Logo

Motel's vintage heritage originated from inspiring thrift shops and second hand stores discovered on an American road trip in 1999. Bringing these looks to the British consumer and carving a unique niche in the marketplace, Motel's vision was born.

Q. Hey guys, hope you’re all well! We’re all really excited for Motel to hit USC this season, can you start by telling us a bit about the brand?
Thanks, we’re excited by the new collection too! Established in the late 90’s, Motel was created after our brand founders set out on a road trip of freedom, discovery and fun across the west coast of America. Inspired by the indie vintage shops and various thrift stores dotted along the Californian coastline, the Motel designers set about bring vintage inspired fashion to the British scene and created a brand for girls who want unique, edgy and eclectic additions to their wardrobe that are guaranteed to make an impact! Combining inspirations from vintage one-offs, global streetfashion and cult trends, Motel is now a leading London based label that is carving a distinct and diverse path across the fashion landscape.

Q. What is the inspiration behind your new season collection?
We took a lot of inspiration from the Orient in our new collection with some strong trend-setting eastern inspired prints and silhouettes such as the new mandala print kimono jacket. We also have a really distinctive collection of after-dark styles with lots of texture, metallic threads and sheer lace. The edgy Strawberry skater dress is a must-have style and features full length sleeves with a subtle skull head embroidered into the lace – with its flared leather look skater skirt, its the perfect combination of cute but cool.

Q. What are the key pieces in the current collection?
The kimono is definitely a must-have style and will bring any wardrobe up-to-date with the season's hot eastern trend. Off the shoulder is another big trend from summer that is set to stay stick around for autumn-winter too and our fitted Madame dress in tiger rose is a great style to show off your shoulders. The vintage inspired rose print really taps into the dark and moody floral prints that were big on the AW13 catwalks too.

Q. What are the key pieces we should keep our eyes peeled for from the Winter collection launching later this year?
The 50’s vintage inspired prom dress with full net skirt is a really key piece for the forthcoming party season. It’s surprisingly versatile to style also and looks cool dressed down with longline knitwear and chunky boots as it does glammed up with pointed courts and a clutch.
The oriental style Martini dress is another key shape for the season. Blending 90’s inspired styling with the strong eastern street trend, it’s a stand out piece that we know is going to be huge for us. We’ve already had so many requests for it from stylists and fashion bloggers who want to shoot and style it.

Q. Celebs are loving Motel! If you could pick three items from your new season collection for the ultimate celeb look what would they be?
We have tons of celeb fans of the brand and girls such as Ellie Goulding, Laura Whitmore, Iggy Azalea, Miley Cyrus and Ashley Tisdale are often spotted wearing the label. I think the top three must-haves would have to be a versatile playsuit such as the Katherine off the shoulder style, its so easy to dress up or down. A great print to set flashbulbs popping – the loose fit Penny dress in mandala print is a really easy to wear style and the vibrant print is so distinctive. Lastly, it has to be a great crop top such as the Fonda. Celebs and fashionistas alike love our signature crops!

Q. If you could sum up a ‘Motel girl’ in 5 words what would they be?
Independent, fashion-loving, rebellious, quirky and fun!
