Commonwealth Games : Glasgow City Guide

The Commonwealth Games have kicked off in Glasgow this week & we’ve been asking the staff in our Scottish office to give us the low-down on how to make the most of the city. If you’re heading up for the games and have a full-on schedule planned, chances are you will need some down time – we’ve spoken to the experts to find out what the city has to offer!

It may not be the biggest city in the UK, but Glasgow definitely holds its own in the retail therapy stakes! Head over to the West End for quirky boutiques and vintage treasure troves -  if that’s not your thing then why not take a stroll down Ingram Street for designer brands and high-end labels? Don’t forget a trip to Buchanan Street, that’s where you’ll find all your favourite high street names (make sure you pop in and say hello at USC!)

You know it’s not all deep fried Mars Bars and haggis right? (Ok, so there is a little bit of that...don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!) Glasgow is home to a huge selection of restaurants, so set some time aside to sample a few of the best. This year you can’t escape the rise of the burger restaurant – and all of them are really good. If you’re craving some of the ultimate comfort food check out Buddy’s, Bread Meats Bread, Ketchup or The Meat Bar. If you need a meat-free alternative check out Vegan café bar, Mono, which boasts good food, drink and live entertainment. Want to try something a bit different? Local fishmongers The Fish Plaice have set up a pop-up restaurant for the duration of the games near Glasgow Green, it promises “Glasgow banter & fresh seafood as you’ve never seen it before".

So you’re on a high from a day at the games and you want to celebrate with a big night out? There’s no shortage of places to go - whatever your taste, the city has something for everyone. Become a local for night and head to Sauchiehall street, here you’ll find well-known Glasgow institutions like The Garage & ABC. If you want something with a touch of class – head towards Merchant City and spend the night sipping cocktails in The Corinthian (make sure you dress for the occasion though!). For a more laid-back experience head to the eternally cool Sub Club or La Cheetah, however, if you prefer getting glammed up check out new addition to the Glasgow nightlife scene, Kokomo.
